My child is a gestalt language processor, now what?

Gestalt Language Processing Strategies

It is important to remember that gestalt language processing is a different way to develop language. It is not a diagnosis or disorder of what is considered “typical” language development. This different language development requires a different therapy approach.

Here are our 10 favorite ways to support gestalt language processors:

  1. Acknowledge scripting and accept it as communication.

  2. Don’t take scripting/echolalia literally, but try to find the underlying meaning.

  3. Model language that you *think* they are trying to communicate.

  4. Model language from their perspective and using phrases that are flexible.

  5. Reduce questions, instead just model language naturally.

  6. Follow your child’s lead, engage in their preferred activities and narrate along the way.

  7. Normalize silence and wait time.

  8. Honor and accept all forms of communication and be open to using different forms of AAC to expand communication.

  9. Program their gestalts/scripts from their shows into their AAC device.

  10. Focus on connection and interactions.

Depending on what stage your child is in, they may benefit from different supports. Strategies and support for GLP’s are highly individualized. The key takeaway is our last tip: focus on connection and interactions.
